Is Artificial Intelligence a Threat to a Graphic Designer’s Work?

THROUGHOUT THIS ARTICLE, I WILL GIVE YOU MY POINT OF VIEW AS A DESIGNER AND ILLUSTRATOR ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) AND HOW IT CAN IMPACT OUR PROFESSION.

Keeping Up-to-Date Without Becoming Overwhelmed

It can be overwhelming to see so many tools emerging constantly. it seems that minute by minute new apps are presented to us that compete with each other to provide us with solutions to problems and streamline processes. A piece of advice I often give myself: “Don’t overload yourself with information, take it step by step.”

“Don’t overload yourself with information, take it step by step.”

First, it’s important to be clear about our professional goal. Where we’re heading, and what we want to achieve. Although saying it is simple, this path can be long and complex. Then, with that clear, the way we carry out creative processes and the tools we choose is a determining factor in our daily lives as designers.

AI Tools as Allies

The selection of tools is a process that should accompany us constantly without causing us a problem. We must be up-to-date, yes. But we also have to organize ourselves so that this constant technological growth does not distract us from our main objective.

These artificial intelligence tools should contribute to the quality of our design work and optimize time. From complex tasks like prototyping and web page design with Framer, to image improvement and retouching with integrated tools in Adobe programs that allow us to achieve high-quality results in seconds through generative artificial intelligence.

Another smart and profitable use of artificial intelligence is the one implemented in the initial creative processes. Briefing stages and mood board creation (mood board definition), as well as the diagramming of planning, detailing of steps, and project stages.

Knowledge and Soft Skills, Key to Standing Out

Now, something key: AI managed by experts gives better results. The importance of knowing how to conceptualize in order to take advantage of AI is essential. Having academic studies and not just technical ones is a plus. As designers, having knowledge of art and design history, color theory, composition, drawing, perspective, typography, and morphology makes a difference. Anyone can use the tools, knowledge sets us apart.

“Soft skills are what guarantees client loyalty through management skills, creativity, and compliance.”

Why doesn’t it replace us? This is where soft skills (Softskills) play a major role and weight. This is what guarantees client loyalty through management skills, creativity, and compliance. Excelling in time management, teamwork, and task coordination is what makes us irreplaceable. And I can’t leave out the importance of networking to add clients.
